Two tall women in feathered hats stand on a round traffic island in a green square, one in a black veil and coat, the other in blue with a pale, mask-like face; behind them dark-suited men stride across the road and the pink arches of a station rise against a night-blue sky. Kirchner painted it in Berlin in 1914. The Neue Nationalgalerie identifies the curved front of a pleasure palace on the left and the entrance to Potsdamer Bahnhof at the centre. The women are prostitutes waiting for customers; Kirchner added the black widow's veil, a wartime fashion, after war broke out. The museum acquired it in 1999.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Acid green, deep blue and black make a bold, urban picture for a living room, hallway or office with white walls. Pair it with Toulouse-Lautrec's At the Moulin Rouge at 16×24 in a black frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
