A tight cluster of houses with brown, moss-coloured roofs and pale walls seems to float on a field of deep blue-black, a white gable rising at the top and washing hung between upper windows. There are no people. Schiele painted the small panel in 1911, looking down from the castle hill at Krumau (Český Krumlov), his mother's birthplace, where the old town crowds into a bend of the Vltava. He called it the picture with his most serious colours. The Leopold Museum, which holds it, reads the deserted town as an allegory of loneliness and isolation.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Brown roofs on a deep blue-black ground make a quiet, moody picture for a study, library or dim hallway. Pair it with Böcklin's Isle of the Dead at 12×18 in a black frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 12×18. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
