The painter looks straight out with a faint smile, her reddish-brown hair parted and drawn back, a necklace of large amber beads at her throat and a camellia sprig with dark green leaves held upright before her chest; the background is a cool turquoise. The narrow panel is painted in flat, simplified areas of earthy colour. She made it in 1906–07, the last year of her life; she died in November 1907, weeks after the birth of her daughter. Karl Ernst Osthaus bought it for the Museum Folkwang from her 1913 retrospective; it was confiscated as degenerate in 1937 and bought back in 1957.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Turquoise, terracotta and amber make a warm, direct self-portrait for a study, bedroom or reading corner. Pair it with Gauguin's Two Tahitian Women at 12×18 in a dark wood frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 12×18. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
