A dark blue apple tree spreads its branches across the canvas against a ground of short strokes and dots in turquoise, orange, ochre and pink that radiate around the crown like light or wind. The trunk and branches are painted in heavy, curving strokes, and the colours are pure and unblended, laid side by side. Mondrian painted it in 1908–09, when summers on the Zeeland coast at Domburg and the example of Neo-Impressionist divisionism led him to brighter colour and a broken touch. Trees became a central subject for him over the following years, and the sequence from works like this through The Red Tree and The Gray Tree to the flowering apple trees of 1912 is the classic path by which he moved from landscape into abstraction. The painting is in the Dallas Museum of Art.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
