The Yellowstone River plunges over its falls and runs through a canyon of yellow and rose-coloured rock, pines clinging to the ledges beneath a vast sky. Moran first saw the scene in 1871 as the artist attached to the Hayden geological survey of Yellowstone; the expedition's findings and his images of the region helped persuade Congress to create the first national park in 1872, the year he painted his first big canvas of the canyon. He returned to the subject throughout his life, and this version, more than four metres wide, was worked on from 1893 to 1901. It gathers the vantage points he had sketched over several days into a single idealised view, and it fixed the image of the West's natural wonders in the American imagination. It is in the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington.
