Munch stands half-length in a dark suit and bow tie, lit from below so that his face and the hand holding a smoking cigarette at his chest glow against a haze of blue and violet smoke. He was thirty-two, living in Berlin and doing well. The painting was shown at Blomqvist in Kristiania in autumn 1895, where it was fiercely debated; after a lecture by the poet Sigbjørn Obstfelder defending Munch, the medical student Johan Scharffenberg cited it when publicly questioning the artist's mental state. The National Gallery bought it that same year, and it is now in the National Museum of Norway.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Smoky blues and violets with one lit face make a moody portrait for a study, office or library with dark walls. Hang it near Schiele's Self-Portrait with Physalis at 18×24 in a black frame for two young painters looking back at you.
