A young woman with long auburn hair stands among straight brown pine trunks, arms held behind her back, looking out at us with shadowed eyes, while behind her a turquoise sea carries the moon's reflection as a pale column. The motif was born at Åsgårdstrand in summer 1893, when Munch painted the first version alongside Moonlight. He returned to it in this 1896 canvas, painted on unprimed canvas and now in the Munch Museum, Oslo. The column of moonlight on the water recurs throughout his pictures of the 1890s.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
