A man in a hat stands by a bridge railing in the foreground, head bowed, while two figures in top hats walk away along the road behind him. Beyond, a blue fjord with sailing ships lies under a sky streaked red and yellow. Signed and dated 1892, the painting also goes by the title Sick Mood at Sunset. While working on it Munch wrote in his diary of the sky suddenly turning red and of sensing a great scream passing through nature, the experience behind The Scream. It launched his series of anxiety paintings and hangs in the Thiel Gallery in Stockholm.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Red sky, blue fjord and one bowed figure make an intense picture for a study, office or hallway rather than a bedroom. Hang it beside Munch's The Scream, its direct successor, at 18×24 in a black frame.
