A red-haired bather rises from the surf, her hair and the foam drawn as the same curling lines, under the lettering "Cabourg à 5 heures de Paris" and the names of the resort's casino and hotels. Privat-Livemont designed the poster in 1896 for the Normandy resort where Proust would later summer, and it is his best-known travel poster; the wave and the hair are among the purest Art Nouveau lines in any poster. This is the reduced version issued in 1897 as plate 88 of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, printed by Chaix; the original poster measured about 60 by 90 cm. The impression reproduced is from the Bibliothèque nationale de France's copy of the series.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A bather in a curling wave in sea green and copper, horizontal, for a bathroom, beach house or bedroom at 24×18 or 32×24 in thin black or dark wood, no mat. It suits a white or pale blue wall and pairs with Toulouse-Lautrec's La Passagère du 54.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18, 32×24 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard; 32×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
