Women bathe and rest on a grassy bank beside a pale blue river: two stand waist-deep in the water with a small boy, one lies stretched on a white cloth, and two more dry themselves among slender trees. Two figures work from a flat boat at upper left, and green meadows and blue woods stretch away behind. Puvis painted this canvas in 1891 as a smaller version of his mural Summer for the Hôtel de Ville in Paris, which has a companion, Winter. The dealer Durand-Ruel bought it from the artist that October, and Jeptha H. Wade gave it to the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1916.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Pale river blue, fresh green and soft flesh tones make a light, summery frieze for a living room or a long wall above a sofa. Pair it with Seurat's Bathers at Asnières at 36×24 in a dark wood frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 36×24. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
