A gentleman in a top hat and evening cape lights his cigar from the pipe of a working man in a cap and scarf under a street lamp, the lettering Mothu et Doria above and Scènes impressionnistes below. Steinlen designed the poster in 1893 for the comic duo Mothu and Doria, who performed sketches of Paris low life in the café-concerts, and he made the meeting of toff and worker the whole joke. This is the reduced version issued in 1896 as plate 46 of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, the monthly series of the best posters printed by Chaix; the original poster measured about 140 by 100 cm. The impression reproduced is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 12×18. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
