A cart with a white horse and a hunched driver passes through the dark streets of Paris at dawn, a bent figure trudging beside it, in a single dark green printed with spatter. Toulouse-Lautrec designed the poster in 1896 for L'Aube, a short-lived illustrated review published at 26 quai d'Orléans, whose title is lettered in white across the top. The subject, the early-morning poor of the city, and the near-monochrome printing make it unlike any other of his posters, closer to the lithographs of Steinlen. Printed by Chaix, Paris. The impression reproduced is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A dark green nocturne, horizontal, for a study, library or hallway at 24×18 or 32×24 in thin black, no mat. It suits a white or deep green wall and pairs with Steinlen's La Rue.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18, 32×24 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard; 32×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
