A bed of blue irises seen close up, their leaves and blooms outlined in dark contours against orange earth and a strip of marigolds behind; a single white iris stands at the left. Van Gogh painted it in May 1889 in the garden of the asylum at Saint-Rémy, within a week of arriving, and it was among the first works he made there. He called it a study, and there is no trace of the agitation that marks some of the later Saint-Rémy canvases: the drawing is firm and the colour clear, with a flatness and outlining that owe a debt to Japanese prints. The painting was shown at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in September 1889. It has been at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles since 1990.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Clear blue irises on orange earth bring strong colour to a kitchen, sunroom or living room; the firm outlines read well across the room at 24×18. Natural wood on a white wall, and hang it beside Sunflowers for a blue-and-yellow pair.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
