Dr Paul Gachet rests his head on his hand at a red table, a sprig of foxglove beside him, his face set in what Van Gogh described as the heartbroken expression of the age. Gachet was a homeopathic doctor with a passion for art and printmaking who knew Manet, Monet, Renoir and Cézanne, and when Van Gogh left the asylum at Saint-Rémy in May 1890 Theo sent him to Auvers-sur-Oise to be under the doctor's eye. Van Gogh painted two versions of the portrait that June. This is the second, which Gachet kept; the first, with yellow books on the table, was sold in 1990 for a then record price and has since disappeared from view. The foxglove, a source of the heart drug digitalis, is the physician's attribute and the one note of consolation. Gachet's children gave the painting to France in 1949, and it hangs in the Musée d'Orsay.
