Branches of an almond tree in full white blossom fill the canvas against a clear turquoise sky, with no ground, trunk or horizon in view. Van Gogh painted it in February 1890 at Saint-Rémy to celebrate the birth of his nephew, Vincent Willem, the son of his brother Theo, and intended it to hang over the baby's bed. The almond is the first tree to flower in Provence, and he chose it as a sign of new life. The flat blue field, the dark outlines and the branches cut by the frame come directly from the Japanese prints he collected. It is one of his calmest and most carefully drawn late works. The painting stayed in the family and is now in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, where it is among the most loved pictures in the collection.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Painted to hang over a baby's bed, and it still belongs in a nursery or bedroom, where the turquoise sky and white blossom are soft enough to sleep under. 24×18 in natural wood on a white or pale blue wall; it also calms a bathroom.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
