A row of two-storey teahouses climbs a steep slope along the right of the picture, where women step out into the road to coax passing travellers inside. Below the bluff the bay opens wide and calm, with a large cargo boat at anchor, small craft rowing out, white sails far off at the left and a dark headland across the water. The print is number four in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Kanagawa was the third station, set on high ground above Edo Bay close to today's Yokohama, and its teahouses looked straight out over the water; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
