A huge old pine has fallen across the mountain road, and its brown trunk, propped on two wooden posts, arches over the picture like a gateway. Beneath it two porters rest by a small fire whose smoke rises in a pale column, one smoking a pipe on a log, while woodcutters with baskets of brushwood come along the path and climb the slope at the right. This is print thirty-three of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō and later Kinjudō, c. 1835–38. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Motoyama was the thirty-second station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
