Against a dark blue-black ground, a tilted cream-yellow square fills most of the canvas, and on and around it float circles: a large pink disc with a soft red halo at upper right, dark green and black discs, smaller dots of red, yellow, blue and violet, and a grey square at the centre packed with its own black and white circles. The halos make the discs seem to glow against the night-coloured ground. Kandinsky painted it in Dessau in 1926, the year he published Point and Line to Plane, his Bauhaus treatise on the basic elements of painting. It is one of a run of mid-1920s canvases built from circles floating in space, often read as cosmic or planetary. Nina Kandinsky gave the painting to the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris in 1976, and it is in the collection of the Centre Pompidou.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
