A pale lilac-white disc, the moon, glows at the centre, surrounded by broad curved bands of blue, green, violet, orange and red that swing around it like halos, with a green arc at the bottom. There is no outline anywhere; forms exist only as contrasts of colour. Delaunay painted it in 1913 in his series of Circular Forms, in which he studied the light of the sun and the moon, and these are among the first paintings in which he left recognisable subjects behind. He believed colours set side by side could produce movement and depth without drawing, an idea he called simultaneity. Delaunay had shown with the Blue Rider in Munich in 1911, and his colour was a decisive influence on Marc and Macke; this canvas is in the Lenbachhaus, home of the city's Blue Rider collection.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
