Several deer in warm ochre and tan rest and graze at the foot of pale, ghostly tree trunks, while above them looping white and red lines, a dark green shape and a pink bird swirl through a deep blue and red space. The animals are calm and compact; the forest around them is all movement. Marc painted it in 1913, the year he helped Herwarth Walden organise the First German Autumn Salon in Berlin, and it has the dreamlike, almost visionary quality of his late animal pictures. Deer, for their gentleness and alertness, were among his favourite creatures, and he returned to them in a second version the following year, now in Karlsruhe. The painting is in The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
