A doe in dark red lies at the lower left with a pale yellow fawn beside her and a blue stag above, the three heads set in a triangle as if they were looking at one another; around them the forest is cut into a crystalline lattice of diagonals, verticals and arcs in green, blue, red and yellow, with a pale green disc like a moon. The animals and the trees interpenetrate, so the deer seem almost transparent. Marc painted it in 1914, one of his last oil paintings, at a time when he had moved close to pure abstraction but here returned to the animal subject. The prismatic colour, limited largely to the primaries and their mixtures, shows the influence of Robert Delaunay's Orphism. It is in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
