Two red foxes are woven into a crystalline mesh of red, white, black, blue and violet planes, one with its head bent down, the other stretching forward toward a beam of yellow light, with a dark crescent at upper left. Animals and surroundings are broken into the same faceted forms, so the picture reads almost like stained glass. Marc painted it in 1913, after seeing French Cubism and the Orphic paintings of Robert Delaunay. The banker Kurt Grawi bought it in 1928; persecuted by the Nazi regime, he emigrated to Chile and sold the painting in 1940. It later passed to Helmut Horten, who gave it to the city of Düsseldorf in 1962. After a restitution claim by Grawi's heirs, the Museum Kunstpalast returned it to them in 2022, and they sold it; it is now in a private collection.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
