A white-walled farmhouse with a red-brown roof sits behind a screen of bare, twisting willows on the bank of a still pond, and the whole scene, trees, house and a pink and gold evening sky, is mirrored in the water below. The branches are drawn in thin, rhythmic lines that already form a kind of lattice. Duivendrecht, a village just south of Amsterdam, was a motif Mondrian painted many times from around 1905. This canvas is dated about 1916, years after he had moved toward abstraction, and he appears to have made such late versions of earlier subjects for collectors who still wanted his landscapes; this one belonged from about that time to Eduard and Lea van der Hoop of Amsterdam. It passed down in their family and was given to the Art Institute of Chicago in 2001.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
