A crowd dressed in black presses towards us, led by a man in a top hat, a bearded man in a hat and a young woman in a bonnet, all with pale, staring faces. Behind them a dark fjord with two ships winds under a sky of red, orange and yellow. Munch painted it in 1894, combining the faces of Evening on Karl Johan with the setting of The Scream; when it was first shown with the Frieze of Life it was titled Red Clouds. In 1896 he made a lithograph and a woodcut of the motif. The canvas is in the Munch Museum, Oslo.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A blazing red and orange sky over black figures makes a strong, unsettled picture for a study, office or hallway rather than a bedroom. Hang it beside Munch's The Scream at 16×24 in a black frame.
