Three young women sit and stand on a tar-paper roof on their day off, combing out and shaking their long wet hair in the sun, with laundry flapping on a line and the brick chimneys and rooftops of lower Manhattan behind them. John Sloan painted it in 1912 from the kind of rooftop life he watched from his studio at 35 Sixth Avenue, and it was one of the two paintings he sent to the Armory Show the following year. The loose, quick brushwork and warm afternoon light are typical of Sloan's best New York pictures, which treated working women's leisure with sympathy rather than as a spectacle. The painting has been in the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Massachusetts, since 1938.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A warm, sunny rooftop scene in brick red, white and soft blue for a living room, hallway or bedroom in a black frame. It pairs well with Bellows's New York pictures and suits a cream or pale grey wall.
