The white-bearded Irish painter John Butler Yeats, father of the poet W. B. Yeats, holds court at the end of a long dinner table in the back yard of the Petitpas sisters' boarding house on West 29th Street, with a circle of writers and artists around him. Yeats had come to New York in 1908 and stayed for the rest of his life, and his evening talk at Petitpas' became a fixture for Sloan's circle; Sloan included himself and his wife Dolly among the diners. He began the picture in 1910 and reworked it until about 1914, and showed it at Kraushaar's gallery in 1917. The Corcoran Gallery of Art bought it in 1932, and it passed to the National Gallery of Art in 2014.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A convivial dinner-table scene in green, cream and warm flesh tones for a dining room, kitchen or bar wall in a black or dark wood frame. It pairs well with other Ashcan School city interiors and suits a deep green or warm white wall.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is Yeats at Petitpas' in the public domain?
Yes. John Sloan (1871–1951) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by National Gallery of Art.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or dark wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Yeats at Petitpas' painted, and in what medium?
Yeats at Petitpas' dates from 1910–c. 1914 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 66.2 × 81.3 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pair.
