In a dim basement beer hall, a woman in a black dress and a wide black hat sits alone at a small table while men in dark suits sit at the tables around her, under a heavy fringed curtain and a frieze of painted roses. John Sloan painted it in Philadelphia in 1901, while he was still earning his living as a newspaper illustrator, and its near-monochrome palette of browns and blacks shows how closely he and Robert Henri were then looking at Manet and Velázquez. It was shown at the Philadelphia Art Club that December and at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1904. The Cleveland Museum of Art acquired it in 1946.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A dark, moody café interior in brown, black and cream for a study, bar area or hallway in a black frame. It pairs well with Whistler's portraits and suits a deep brown, olive or charcoal wall.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
