Two centuries of fish plates
Marcus Elieser Bloch's Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische, published in Berlin between 1782 and 1795, is the great hand-coloured fish book of the eighteenth century, its plates heightened with silver and gold leaf for the scales. A century later, Sherman Foote Denton painted the game fish of New York for the state fisheries reports of 1896 to 1907, chromolithographs of brook trout, bass and pike that remain the definitive portraits of those species.
For cabins, lake houses and anglers
The Denton plates are landscape-format and show a single fish against white, so they work in pairs and rows along a hallway or above a bar. Bloch's plates are more ornate and suit a study. Both are reproduced whole from museum scans with the plate's own caption kept.
