Audubon's owls
Audubon painted eleven owls for The Birds of America, including the snowy owl pair hunting at night, the great horned owl, the barred owl and the barn owl. They are among the most dramatic plates in the series because he set them against dark skies and dead timber rather than the pale grounds of the songbirds, so they hold a wall from across a room.
Where they work
An owl print suits a study, a hallway or a child's room equally well. The snowy owl and the barn owl are the calmest; the great horned and the great grey owls are the most intense. Pair two upright owls at 16×24 either side of a doorway, or hang one large 24×36 above a desk.
