Benjamin Franklin, wrapped in a billowing red cloak, sits on a cloud and holds up the key on his kite string as sparks leap from it, while cherubs work with electrical apparatus around him. West painted this small oil sketch about 1816, late in his life, perhaps for a large portrait of Franklin that he never made. It is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
