A pot of primroses and a scatter of apples on a white cloth, set on a table with a scalloped apron and curved legs that Cézanne seems to have kept for three of his finest still lifes of the 1890s. He rarely painted living plants or cut flowers because they wilted under his slow, prolonged gaze, and this is one of only three still lifes in which a potted plant appears. The grey-green wall and the pale cloth let the yellows and reds of the fruit carry the picture, while the slightly rocking perspective of the table is typical of his late work. Painted around 1890, the canvas was once owned by Claude Monet, a passionate gardener himself, which says something about how fellow painters prized it. It came to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1951 through the bequest of Sam A. Lewisohn.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
