Meriwether Lewis and William Clark stand in a dugout canoe on the Columbia River in 1805 while Sacagawea, their Shoshone interpreter, signals in peace to a canoe of Chinook people, with forested mountains rising in the mist. Russell painted it in watercolour in 1905, the centenary of the expedition's arrival at the Pacific. It is in the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
