A family escaping slavery gallops on a single horse across a battlefield at dawn, the father urging the horse on, the mother looking back over her shoulder and holding a small child. Johnson wrote on the back that he had witnessed the scene near Manassas, Virginia, in March 1862, while following the Union army. It is in the Brooklyn Museum.
