Adam and Eve, tiny and bowed, are driven out through a rocky gateway by a shaft of blinding light; behind them Paradise glows with lush foliage and clear skies, while before them lies a blasted world of dead trees, a smoking volcano and a wolf tearing at a deer as a vulture circles. The canvas is split down the middle between the two realms. Cole painted it in 1828 and showed it that year at the National Academy of Design in New York, of which he was a founding member, together with a companion Garden of Eden now in Fort Worth. He hoped these biblical landscapes would raise his art above mere views; they did not sell, but his patron Robert Gilmor backed his travels to Europe. The cavernous scale recalls John Martin's illustrations to Paradise Lost. It is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, a Karolik gift of 1947.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
