Les Maîtres de l'Affiche

Two young women in red and green, one holding a twist of wire, kneel beside an electrical apparatus framed in Art Nouveau vines, above a panel announcing the centenary of Alessandro Volta's discovery of the battery, Como, May to October 1899. Adolfo Hohenstein designed the poster for the exhibition of electricity and silk held in Volta's home town; it was printed by G. Ricordi in Milan. This is plate 160 of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, printed by Chaix in 1899.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

Tan, red and sage in a tall format, for a study, hallway or home office at 12×18 or 16×24 in thin black or dark wood, no mat. It suits a white or warm grey wall and pairs with Hohenstein's Iris.

Size. We'd hang this one at 12×18. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.

Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The image fills the print at the painting's own proportions; nothing is trimmed to fit a frame.
Is Esposizione di Como 1899 in the public domain?
Yes. Adolfo Hohenstein (1854–1928) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Bibliothèque nationale de France.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18 and 16×24 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or dark wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Esposizione di Como 1899 painted, and in what medium?
Esposizione di Como 1899 dates from 1899 and was made in colour lithograph (Les Maîtres de l'Affiche plate after the poster); the original measures 39 × 29 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 16×24 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 12×18 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For Esposizione di Como 1899 we'd choose 12×18.
