In a dark forest of thin trunks a woman in a white dress, her bodice open and red hair falling loose, faces us with her hands raised to her head, while a man in black huddles at the lower left, his face in his hand. A stylised tree trunk frames him. In a letter of September 1895 Munch called the picture Adam and Eve after the Fall. A lithograph of the motif carries his line about feeling their love lying on the ground like a heap of ashes, which gives the title. The museum bought it in 1909; it is in the National Museum of Norway.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Deep maroon forest, a white dress and red hair make a dramatic, adult picture for a study, library or living room with dark walls. Pair it with Munch's Madonna at 24×36 in a black frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; dark wood warms it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
