Two tall lilac-grey buildings with hipped roofs face each other across a gap, joined at street level by a low wing pierced by a single arched gateway, and between them there is nothing but pale grey sky and fog. Rows of white-framed windows are the only detail. Hammershøi found the view near his home in Christianshavn, looking from St Annæ Street toward the Asiatic Company buildings, now the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The National Gallery of Denmark notes that fog this dense is rare there, so the empty gateway was a deliberate choice. He painted it in 1902; the museum acquired it in 1970.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
