A freshly felled pine lies in the snow, its cut end a disc of brilliant yellow and its length running diagonally back into the forest between tall pink and violet trunks. Shadows on the snow are blue and lilac, and dark green pines close the view. Munch painted it in 1912 as one of a group of winter forest pictures with logs as their subject. The exaggerated perspective makes the log seem to swing into the picture from left or right as you move in front of it, an effect sharpened by the contrast of yellow and violet. It is in the Munch Museum, Oslo.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Snow white, violet and a burst of yellow bring light and energy to a hallway, kitchen or living room. Pair it with Marc's Siberian Dogs in the Snow, another winter scene in bold colour, at 24×18 in a dark wood frame.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×18. Prints at 16×12, 24×18 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
