In 1640 Rembrandt was the most sought-after portraitist in Amsterdam, and this is how he chose to show it. He leans on a stone parapet in a velvet beret, fur-trimmed coat and a slashed sleeve, dressed not in the fashion of his own day but in the costume of a gentleman of the 1520s. The pose borrows from two Renaissance portraits he had seen in Amsterdam, Raphael's Baldassare Castiglione and Titian's Man with a Quilted Sleeve, and he had sketched the Raphael at auction the year before, noting its price. The parapet deepens the space and makes the picture read like a window. The message is deliberate: an artist claiming the rank of a gentleman and the company of the great Italians. Analysis at the National Gallery, London, where the painting is NG672, identified a sparse palette of lead white, bone and charcoal black, ochres and vermilion.
