Grey ice floats down the East River in New York under a heavy winter sky, past the snow-covered buildings and domes of Blackwell's Island, with a dark tugboat moored at the lower right. Henri painted it in 1900, the year he settled in New York, when he was turning the city's everyday views into broad, dark, quickly brushed pictures. The island, then home to a prison and hospitals, is now Roosevelt Island. The painting is in the Whitney Museum of American Art.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

A moody grey-and-olive winter river for a study, office or hallway in a black frame. It suits charcoal, warm grey or deep green walls at 16×24 and pairs with Henri's Snow in New York.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.

Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
