The bare granite summit of Mount Monadnock catches the first pink light of a winter morning above a dark band of pine and spruce, with a frozen, misty foreground below. Thayer lived at the foot of the mountain in Dublin, New Hampshire, and painted it many times in his last years. The forest and snow are worked in muted greys and browns, so the warm light on the peak stands out. The Metropolitan Museum acquired the painting in 1917.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
