A skeleton rides a pale horse around an empty racetrack under a stormy sky, a serpent coiled in the foreground. Ryder said the picture came from the suicide of a waiter he knew, who had lost his savings betting on a horse race. He worked on it for more than a decade. It is in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
