A woman in a pale gown sits with her back to us, playing a spinet in a softly lit room, her figure and the instrument dissolving into warm brown shadow. Dewing's small interiors of women at music or reading were collected by Charles Lang Freer and John Gellatly; this one came to the Smithsonian American Art Museum with Gellatly's collection.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
