A still river runs through a flat, misty valley near Dieppe in Normandy, with reeds and grasses in the foreground and a grey-green hill beyond, all reduced to a few soft bands of colour. Twachtman painted it in 1885 while studying in Paris, and its silvery, almost Japanese simplicity shows Whistler's influence. It is one of the largest pictures he made and is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A quiet silver-green riverscape for a bedroom, study or living room, framed in thin black or dark wood. It suits sage, grey or warm white walls and is a calming single picture.
