A young woman in a kimono, modelled by Joanna Hiffernan, sits on the floor looking at Japanese woodblock prints by Hiroshige, in front of a gold folding screen painted with a landscape. Whistler collected Japanese prints and porcelain in the 1860s, and this is one of a small group of pictures in which he set his model among them. It is in the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A rich purple and gold interior for a living room, study or reading corner, framed in dark wood. It pairs well with Hiroshige prints and suits deep green, aubergine or warm white walls.
