The dancer Louise Weber, known as La Goulue, kicks up her white petticoats at the centre of the Moulin Rouge dance floor while her partner Valentin le Désossé, drawn as a grey silhouette with a top hat and a jutting chin, looms in the foreground and the audience is reduced to a black frieze of hats behind her. The yellow globes of the gas lamps float across the top. Toulouse-Lautrec designed it in 1891, his first poster, commissioned by the cabaret for its second season; around three thousand copies were pasted up across Paris and made him famous overnight. The flat colour, cropped figures and bold lettering came from Japanese prints and from Jules Chéret, whose poster it replaced. Impressions survive in many museums, including the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
