A yellow Christ hangs on a dark cross in an autumn landscape of yellow fields and red trees, while Breton women in regional dress kneel in prayer at its foot. Gauguin painted it at Pont-Aven in the autumn of 1889, basing the figure on a seventeenth-century painted wooden crucifix in the nearby chapel of Trémalo. He said the colour was chosen to convey what he felt about the isolated, pious life of the peasants, and the harvest setting carries its own meaning in a region where the grain cycle was read as a parallel to Christian death and rebirth. With its flat planes and heavy outlines the painting is a central work of cloisonnism and, with The Green Christ, a key to Symbolist painting. Seized by the Nazis in Paris in 1940 and assigned to Göring, it was recovered after the war and bought by the Albright-Knox in Buffalo, now the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, in 1946.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The image fills the print at the painting's own proportions; nothing is trimmed to fit a frame.
Is The Yellow Christ (Le Christ jaune) in the public domain?
Yes. Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Buffalo AKG Art Museum.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was The Yellow Christ (Le Christ jaune) painted, and in what medium?
The Yellow Christ (Le Christ jaune) dates from 1889 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 92.1 × 73.3 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
