A young woman turns in her chair, lips parted, under a wide hat of feathery scarlet, a royal-blue robe over a white collar and pearl drops at her ears. Behind her is a tapestry; in front, the carved lion-head finials of the chair catch points of light. At just 23 by 18 centimetres it is one of Vermeer's smallest works, and it is painted on a reused wooden panel rather than his usual canvas, which for years fuelled doubt about the attribution. A technical study by the National Gallery of Art before its 2022 exhibition Vermeer's Secrets settled the question in Vermeer's favour and found that he began the panel as a portrait of a man in a wide-brimmed hat. It is a tronie, a study of a type rather than a named sitter, dated about 1669. Andrew Mellon bought it in 1925 and it entered the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1937.
