A young man in a fur-trimmed cap rides a pale horse through a dim landscape with a bow, quiver and sabre at his side, the background left sketchy and in places unfinished. Nobody knows who he is or whether the picture is a portrait at all; the costume is Polish or Hungarian, and the horse has drawn as much comment as the rider. It is usually dated to the 1650s, when Rembrandt's style had grown broad and shadowy. Henry Clay Frick bought it in 1910 from the Tarnowski family in Poland, and it has hung in The Frick Collection in New York ever since. In 1984 a member of the Rembrandt Research Project suggested the pupil Willem Drost might have had a hand in it, but the Frick never changed its label, and later scholars including Ernst van de Wetering and Simon Schama argued firmly for Rembrandt. Its air of mystery is a large part of its hold.
