The American dancer Loïe Fuller whirls in her serpentine dance, her enormous silk veils lit from below in orange, violet and yellow, her name lettered in red across the foot of the sheet. Jules Chéret designed the poster in 1893 for her first season at the Folies-Bergère, where she danced under coloured electric light on a glass floor and became the sensation of Paris; Chéret made four colour variants of the same design, and this is one of them. The dissolving figure, printed in his trademark spatter of overlapping colour, caught what every painter of the period tried to catch in her. Printed by Chaix, Paris. The impression reproduced is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
